On Saturday evening I went to my local Scottish music venue to see Idlewild.
Oh my word.
They were amazing.
Seriously, absolutely brilliant. I haven’t seen them live since my 18th birthday over two years ago. And to be honest, I haven’t been faithfully listening to their music every day since then either.
This was their “best of” tour. They played everything, from Queen Of The Troubled Teens to…new stuff… Ok, ok, I haven’t bought their latest album BUT I PLAN TO.
The band themselves were very much into the music. Unfortunately, I have to admit, Roddy didn’t seem too thrilled to be out there performing to that many people. When he wasn’t singing he kind of wandered to the side of the stage. The crowd did start chanting “Roddy, Roddy” at one point though. It must be a bit annoying for the rest of the band to not get chanted for I guess.
ANYWAY. Half way through the set I saw some people coming on to the side of the stage. They were waving their arms at the band, not in a “woo, you guys are awesome I want to touch you” way but more in a “you really must stop making noise right now” kind of way. When the band obliged the fire alarm could be heard.
Panic etc. Well no, my first thought wasn’t that I might be in trouble from a fire here (potentially all those false alarms whilst in student accommodation) but more that I was very upset to be missing out on half the set! Luckily, after 10 minutes waiting outside we were ushered very quickly back into the hall where Idlewild promptly played their next three songs with no breaks in between and at three times normal speed.
Sigh. Nothing quite like seeing Idlewild surrounded by true Scottish fans though. Something you wouldn’t experience if you say, saw them in London.
