The Potter Row-bot

Filed under: Life, University, Uni Friends, Scott — Sarah @ 6:12 pm

On Saturday I attended the “Big Cheese” event at Potterrow.

It was acutally awesome. I went with Scott and his flat mates and then saw Alec and his mates there too. Hurrah for meeting people while you’re out. A good time was being had chatting but then, out of the corner of my eye I saw a glint of metal.

What was that? Was it someone dressed up as a robot? Surely it wasn’t…it was! There was someone dressed up in foiled cardboard boxes, silver body paint and random flashing lights. That person was better than anynoe else here, they had to know.

I wandered over to them and shook their hand. Then the robot said something to me, “Wiseman”. Eh? The robot knew my name? I then looked beyond the silver face and realised it was Kat Oatey. Excellent, I knew the robot! My first question was obviously why was she dressed like she was? Apparently it was Karen’s birthday fancy dress outing.

5 minutes later and I was dancing with a robot, a ninja turtle (Raphael) and two smurfs, all with body paint. That basically meant that at the end of the night (which came early because I was working the next day) I had random silver, green and blue splotches over my face and arms.

Brilliant night.

I now own an N64 again. Woohoo, I love it. I am currently in the process of finding all the old games I used to have. I need to buy another controller so I can beat everyone at F Zero X and Golden Eye.

I’m writing this in the lab after having completed a practical. We’re in the second week of lectures now and I must admit, after my initial enthusiasm for them, I’m gradually getting more tired by them already. Although I am forcing myself to take thousands of notes which is definitely helping. But that’s no different from last year. Thankfully though, one other thing hasn’t changed about my attitude to all this: I was just sat here for two hours doing the programming practical and I enjoyed every minute of it. Sort of.

I’m still on the right course for me. Huzzah.

An Update

Filed under: Life, Jo, Uni Friends, Scott — Sarah @ 12:00 am

Still there is no Internet in our flat so I apologise for the horendous (and rather John like) lack of updates here.

I’ve been having a very good few weeks.

In them I have:

Seen Regina Spektor, Bill Bailey and Jimmy Carr perform (not together),

Partied with the Editors (apparently),

Climbed Arthur’s Seat once more,

Had a flat night out,

Entertained southern friends,

and

Got a job at Tie Rack.

On the subject of jobs:

Claire worked at Barrats and Vue, quit Barrats but stayed at Vue so now we get to go see free films,

Ruth worked at the Union during the festival, got us cheap drinks and did some drug busting,

Josephine earnt £5000 an hour cleaning and then got a job at a bar and now knows all cocktail mixes that exist,

and

Scott quit Morissons and got a job at H&M and soon will get a 25% discount.

If you’re expecting a Christmas present from me this year, it is most likely going to be a tie, scarf, or piece of H&M stock.

Wowee, such a lot of stuff happening, and all whilst (and despite) the overwhelming numbers of tourists blocking the paths, urinating on the walls and stumbling around the streets of Edinburgh.

I love the festival.

That rain smell

Filed under: Life, Family, University, John, Uni Friends, Scott — Sarah @ 7:23 pm

I am back in Essex now. This is now the only abode that I live at as I have been thrown from my University accommodation. It was rather stressful/sad packing everything that I’ve been living with for a year into a bag.

I had to say good bye for the forseeable future to John yesterday too. That was a bit intense. I’ve always known that he would leave but I didn’t think he actually would. I cried a bit. You would too if your one of your best friends was leaving your life after only having been in it for 9 months. I shall miss him greatly but I do hope he’s enjoying his extensive travels around Europe and Africa.

If that wasn’t bad enough I also had to say good bye to Scott this morning although hopefully that will only be for a month. Sad sad sadness.

I’m very much looking forward to seeing you Southerners though.

Another thing to make me happy to be home was that I finally got my birthday present from Amy. It is the tshirt you’ve been longing for all your life.

Haha, the answer is of course Y. Type it now, see what happens…*

Scott posted a picture of a squirrel that he took whilst we were at the botanic garden. It’s poor, this one that I took is better in every way.

Finally, if you have heard of or check regularly the website Post Secret then I suggest you check out this week’s lot of post cards. The penultimate card is the best one I’ve ever seen. Check it. It makes me happy.

*If I’ve done this right then absolutely nothing at all should happen.

Last last last

Filed under: Life, University, Uni Friends, Scott — Sarah @ 1:31 pm

I just accidentally watched about a minute of Big Brother 32 or whatever it is now. For a reality tv show I had a surprisingly overwhelming thoguht of “Man, what bad acting.”

A lot of lasts are happening right now. This is my last Sunday in this room. Ever. Not just for summer, but ever. I know I still have three years of Uni left but still, leaving this room means I’m done with a quarter of my Uni career. That is scary. I’m not 18 anymore either. This (Uni) year has gone so so quickly. I’m at the point where I can’t imagine what my life would be like without everyone I’ve met here. I’ve made some amazing friends this year and met Scott. Unfortunately, the end of this year also brings the end to John’s stay here in the Burg. Obviously I always knew this would be the case but still I could easily go for another four years plus of friendship from him. More on that later.

The population of the Uni has decreased significantly too. Everyone in the halls of residence has had to move out now. This means I don’t get to spend time in the luxurious abode that is Chancellor’s Court, Scott’s hall. We moved him out finally last night. I’m just going to befriend a fresher next year who lives there and it’ll all be ok.

The last “Big Cheese” and “Pleasure Dome” nights were on at the Uni on Saturday night. I’ve never before managed to get in as the queues are usually horrendous but with a little more planning and a little less students to attend we got in this time. A rather top night was had by all. Had to leave early though however as Tessy was leaving the next day.

Right, now all the sentimental malarky is done with, on to some pictures and unimportance.

Firstly to the only two picture we took whilst Tessy was up here. They are of us posing with cows. These things have decended upon the Burg and can be found anywhere you care to look. More information here. By “information” I mean you can colour a cow in and it has the potential to be super fun.

Claire rightly realised there was serious posing potential with the cows and went for the old classic of milking.

Cow1.JPG

I however just chose posing. It’s the sunglasses, they make me do it. Claire took the picture and decided it was more arty without the cow’s head. Or something.

For Scott’s birthday I bought him some poi. He has really got into them and bought himself some glow poi the other day from eBay. We took them out for a spin (GET IT?! THAT’S AN AMAZING JOKE! I DIDN’T EVEN MEAN TO) last night and here is a rather cool picture of me somehow creating a circle.

Poi1.JPG

And here is me doing something madder.

Poi2.JPG

There are some impressive photos of Scott too but since he has that bloggy thing now I suppose I should let him post them. Sigh.

Scott bought me flowers yesterday. Before you ask it was for no reason at all except that he is lovely and the flowers at the end of his shift at Morrisons didn’t look as dead and sorry for themselves as they usually do. Unfortunately I didn’t have a vase and so had to use a sawn off shot gun to deal with them robinsons juice bottle instead. It works perfectly well, just looks a little studenty that’s all.

Roses1.jpg

If, like me, you have a desire to see the same flowers but in black and white, today is your lucky day.

Roses2.JPG

These flowers are very important to me. They are the first that haven’t been bought for me by either family or a teacher.

Quickly

Filed under: Life, Uni Friends — Sarah @ 7:17 pm

I’m not feeling funny so I’m just giving you an update of what has been happening.

Tess came up on Monday.

I saw Josh Rouse on Monday with Claire.

I saw Hot Chip with Scott, Claire and Lauren on Wednesday.

I saw X-men 3 last night.

Everything I did I enjoyed immensely.

I have one more week left in this room.

I am home for summer on June 4th.

So, I finished my last exam on Monday. Since then there has been a veritable whirlwind of action; parties, day trips, playing computer games and things that are cooler than playing computer games.

On Monday, Scott had his birthday and quiet drinks were had.

Then on Tuesday, the flat 2 boys threw the end of exam/end of a year of Uni party that we’d all been waiting for.

BBQ4.JPG

Yes, it was that kind of a barbeque.

Fun was had with “the girls”

BBQ1.JPG

Alec creepily stroked his Chardonnay

BBQ3.JPG

Kat played with candles and I took and awesome photo, even if I do say so myself.

BBQ2.JPG

I had fun with Alec’s crazy tube scarf. Not only are there multiple pictures similar to this one but there is also a video of me doing a conceptual dance with it to A-ha’s Take On Me.

BBQ5.JPG

And art was created, is expresses the thought “it blows my mind”.

BBQ6.JPG
That was a fun shin dig.

On Wednesday Scott and I had a day of fun. It started off by going to the cinema to see Brick. Alright film, has potential to become a bit of a cult film, no Donnie Darko though. Then we had lunch, then we went to the museum. Whilst there, I learnt how to convince people I was an astronaut using only a bottle top, empty yoghurt pot and NASA funding.

Day2.JPG

We then went and saw Prime. It was pretty poor but I expected no more so was not disappointed. The main point of that was that we went to the cinema twice in one day which is pretty wild.

Then we had dinner and FINALLY finished off with a few drinks at Wetherspoons. £1.25 for vodka and a mixer? Suave.
